Literary Analysis of: The Hundredth Dove

The Fowler crouched down ready to throw his net to capture doves for the King’s wedding. He spots a flock of doves throws his net and captures the most beautiful white dove he has ever seen. As he lifts the net the dove slips through and flies away, the fowler checks the net and finds no possible way the dove could have flown away. That was a piece from the story The Hundredth Dove by Jane Yolen . The mode of literature that best fit this story is Romance.

In the Romance mode of literature it begins with the main character having a minor conflict, in this story the main character is the fowler and his conflict is catching 100 doves for the King’s Wedding. Then it ends with life symbolism, in this case the life symbolism is the fowler wearing the ring that the white dove that he killed wore, around his neck as a necklace. Another thing that would fit the life symbolism is when he takes in the doves and swears never again to eat any type of meat and to just live off the natural fruits and berries in the forest.

Along with the Romance is the symbolism in the story things like the colors they mention and the animals.  The colors that they mention in the story are the white dove and a gold ring these are a part of symbolism in the romance mode of literature. Another part of the symbolism is the weather and the author always said that it was a soft breeze and a light mist and those are also a part of the romance mode of literature.  Also Yolen made the title of the story The Hundredth Dove fit with symbolism in romance mod of literature because the dove is a part of the romance mode.

In the story The Hundredth Dove the author lets the reader see the struggles that people have when they have to hurt something they love. The symbolism in the story shows what the people of the old days would do just so they can have a title as a fowler to the King or the King’s country. When the story ends the author has gone through the complete cycle of the romantic mode of literature and has shown the symbolism needed to fit the romance mode of literature. The best way to describe the mode of literature the author used would have to be the romantic mode of literature.
